Nick Stahl: Skid row search for missing actor yields few clues

Stahl's wife, Rose Murphy, reported him missing shortly after 10 a.m. Monday to Hollywood Division officers, spokesman Richard French said. She said the last time she saw him was May 9.

Murphy filed court papers in February, saying that the couple had been separated since January. She asked that Stahl's visitations with their daughter, Marlo, 2, be limited. She also asked for proof he hadn't used drugs within 24 hours before seeing her, KTLA-TV reported.

The director who worked with Stahl on the movie "388 Arletta Avenue" told People magazine that the actor showed no signs of being in trouble.

"He was fantastic — not a single problem," Randall Cole told the magazine  "He was a total professional and knew his lines. There was no diva behavior at all."

Lakers

Thunder-Lakers Preview

LOS ANGELES (AP) — If the Los Angeles Lakers can just shake the memory of the disastrous final two minutes of Game 2, they’ll find plenty of reasons in the first 46 minutes to be encouraged about their chances this weekend against Oklahoma City.

After blowing a seven-point lead and the chance to steal homecourt advantage from the powerful Thunder on Wednesday night, the third-seeded Lakers’ fate will be decided rapidly at Staples Center, with back-to-back games Friday and Saturday. Oklahoma City leads the series 2-0, and could earn its second straight trip to the Western Conference finals Saturday night.

The Lakers have now lost four of their last five playoff games since taking a 3-1 lead in the first round against Denver, but they imposed their favored style on Game 2 until their late collapse. Los Angeles locked down Russell Westbrook , limited Kevin Durant with double-teams and thwarted the Thunder’s transition game, holding Oklahoma City to its lowest scoring total of the entire season.

None of it helped when the Lakers allowed nine unanswered points to close the 77-75 loss, but at least they know shutting down the Thunder is possible. Read the rest of this entry »

Recommended: ‘Dictator’ will delight fans of Sacha Baron Cohen

VIDEO: ‘The Dictator’ drops Kim Jong-II Ashes on Ryan Seacrest

Like any notorious tyrant, Aladeen needs at least one double to throw enemies off and even to be assassinated from time to time, which is what gets him into trouble in the quick-firing script by Baron Cohen, Alec Berg, David Mandel and Jeff Schaffer. Aladeen’s resentful chief henchman Tamir (Ben Kingsley), finds a dimwitted shepherd who’s a twin for his boss and, on a trip to New York, plans to pass the imposter off as the real thing for a speech at the United Nations. Tamir also will have the stand-in sign a new, democratic constitution that will make him and various business associates, notably a Chinese capitalist (Bobby Lee), very rich indeed.

VIDEO: The Dictator: Traile r

Sidelined and shorn of his facial shrubbery, Aladeen is relegated to the hoi polloi for the first time in his life — and in the United States, no less. Much of the film’s most successful cultural humor stems from the almost unimaginable relationship between Aladeen, who takes up the name of Allison Burgers, and vegan/feminist/all-natural/way-too-politically correct manager of the Free Earth Collective, Zoey (a brown-haired Anna Faris), whom he first encounters at an anti-Aladeen protest rally. Newsweek names Obama America’s first gay president

CHICAGO, May 14, 2012 — Toni Morrison named Bill Clinton America’s first black president. Now Andrew Sullivan and Newsweek have named President Obama America’s first gay president. The magazine canonized him with the front cover, rainbow halo and all.

Clinton embraced his title as America’s first black president. Will Obama embrace his title as well?

Toni Morrison is a noted author. Andrew Sullivan is a noted writer, blogger, self-styled conservative, libertarian, or contrarian depending on the day of the week, and a noted homosexual. Newsweek is struggling for relevance.

Newsweek’s cover directly competes in outrageousness with Time Magazine’s. Time’s cover featured a mother breastfeeding her three-year-old son. Both are political in nature: Newsweek beatified Obama for his support of gay marriage; Time showed us how politicians are raised.

What was editor Tina Brown thinking when she chose that cover? Brown exploited Obama’s decision in an outrageous manner to create buzz for Newsweek, and she did it to compete with Time.

Controversy drives sales. What can be more controversial or outrageous than naming President Obama America’s first gay president? How better to do it than portray Obama as a saint with a rainbow halo? Brown says the president earned every one of those colorful stripes. Read the rest of this entry »

Actions in Congress Resonate in the Race for the White House

THE HOUSE As they barrel toward the fall campaign season, Mr. Romney and Mr. Obama are both pressing for an advantage among one group: women. And House Republicans may not be helping Mr. Romney.

This week, the House will take up the renewal of the Violence Against Women Act, a bill that has already passed the Senate with bipartisan support. The White House has promoted the bill’s renewal as an important tool in protecting women.

But House Republicans have balked at the Senate’s version, preferring a version that White House officials and Democrats have derided as a way to weaken the legal protections for women. That could set up a contentious debate that may put Mr. Romney in an awkward position as he courts women voters.

Mr. Romney has said he hopes a version of the act can be reauthorized. But a protracted fight over the issue in Congress will give Mr. Obama and the Democrats another opportunity to accuse the Republicans of conducting a “war on women. Read the rest of this entry »

Lugar’s legacy in Senate: Cooperation and security

WASHINGTON (AP) — Far from politics, six-term Sen. Richard Lugar is considered a visionary who looked beyond U.S. exuberance over the end of the Cold War and saw the dangers and opportunities in the collapse of a nuclear-armed Soviet Union.

In an age that worships whiz kids from Wall Street to Silicon Valley, the 80-year-old, soft-spoken Republican is widely described as a man ahead of his times, a thoughtful leader in the international arena who valued cooperation over partisanship. In 1991, he collaborated with former Democratic Sen. Sam Nunn on landmark legislation to help the former Soviet states destroy and secure their weapons of mass destruction, a program still going full bore today with thousands of nuclear warheads eliminated and nearly a thousand long-range missiles destroyed.

That singular achievement in a 35-year Senate career focused heavily on foreign policy and national security made Lugar’s decisive defeat in Tuesday’s Indiana primary so painful for Republicans and Democrats alike.

“I’m just devastated,” Sen. Susan Collins, R-Maine, said in an interview Wednesday. “He is such a fine person and has made so many contributions to this country’s security and to the security of the entire world through the work he’s done on nuclear non-proliferation. I just can’t imagine the U.S. Senate without Dick Lugar, so I’ll miss him terribly. Read the rest of this entry »

Levitra is a drug that has been made in order to help men who have erectile dysfunction. It is the second of this type of drug to be made available in the United States. There was a time when erectile dysfunction was thought to be the result of psychological factors. However, that is no longer thought to be the case. Just by taking a pill such as Levitra, men no longer have to suffer with the consequences of erectile dysfunction.

Levitra 10mg or levitra 20mg is taken by a man right before he wants to have intercourse. It wears off a few hours later. Lower doses offer less side effects and a person should take the lowest dose that is needed. At most, it should be taken once a day. It should not be effected by food, however its effects can be slowed down if a fatty meal is eaten.

There are many reasons why a person may desire to purchase levitra 20 mg or levitra 10mg online. Purchasing medication such as that online can be very convenient. A person who needs it would not have to go out to a pharmacy in order to get it. This would allow them to get what they need without sacrificing their privacy as well. They would not have to worry about people that they see at the pharmacy or drugstore knowing that they are taking this medication.

Purchasing levitra online may also allow a person to save money. A business that offers medication online may not have expenses that are as high as brick and mortar businesses. Therefore, they may be able to pass on the savings to their customers. People do not have to brave long lines or crowded stores to get their medication. They can order online at their convenience and wait for their package to be delivered to their homes or businesses. This can allow them to use the time they would have spent running around town to take care of their other responsibilities and they would not have to worry about other people knowing which medication they are taking.

Howard Carter King Tut Google Logo Pays Homage to Famous …

Google’s homepage logo today is a birthday tribute to archaeologist Howard Carter, who discovered King Tutankhamun’s tomb in 1922. The Google Doodle is an illustration of Carter standing in front of the sarcophagus, amid other ancient Egyptian artifacts excavated from the tomb, including a statue of Anubis.

Carter left London, England, to chase his dream of assisting in the excavation of Middle Kingdom Egyptian at just 17. He would work as an archaeologist and artist, replicating the treasures recovered in his digs, for thirty years before the discovery that would make him a household name to this day.

It was on November 4, 1922 that his excavation group discovered the stairs to King Tut’s four-room chamber. It turned out to be the best preserved and most intact pharaonic tomb in the Valley of the Kings and remains at present. In what is now a famous exchange, Lord Carnarvon, who had enlisted Carter to supervise his excavations, asked, “Can you see anything?” Carter replied, “Yes, wonderful things.”

Indeed, the tomb was filled with over 3,000 priceless items ; so much that it took Carter a full 10 years to extract and catalogue its contents. Read the rest of this entry »

Detroit Tigers’ Octavio Dotel pitches scoreless seventh in 700th career game

DETROIT — Even 14-year veterans can still get nervous every once in a while.

On the verge of making his 700th career appearance, Detroit Tigers right-hander Octavio Dotel said he couldn’t shake the butterflies in his stomach moments before taking the mound against the division-leading Texas Rangers.

“I’ll be honest with you, I was nervous,” Dotel said. “They had been hitting it hard off everyone.”

With the Tigers carrying a 3-1 lead, the 38-year-old Dotel was called upon to pitch the seventh inning against a team that had bullied the Tigers for 19 hits and 10 runs earlier in the day.

The appearance made him the 93rd pitcher in major league history to appear in 700-plus game. But, he still wanted to make sure it was an appearance worth remembering.

“Sometimes, you just don’t want to face batters when they’re that hot — like the way they were right now,” Dotel said.

But, he did anyway. And the red-hot Rangers failed to spoil his milestone as Dotel pitched a scoreless seventh inning to help preserve the Tigers’ 3-2 win.

“When you come in to pitch against a team like that, you just have to say, ‘God, please, help me out. Read the rest of this entry »
